THE LOVEABLE SCARLET. MY BIG & BOLD DATE.
AS DEMURE AS A BULL IN A CHINA SHOP.

SEPTEMBER 27TH, 2008

I believe it was Jessica Rabbit who said something like, “I’m not bad – I’m just drawn that way!” but I haven’t a clue what Scarlet’s excuse was. Once I convinced her to skip the flambé, we came upon the subject of wine (magnifique!). It was the only time on our date I could get a word in edgewise, but get them in I did. Between the Chateau Timberlay, the Pink Champagne (Moet & Chandon) and the Calvet Saint Emilion, I was brimming with conversational kindling.

A woman like Scarlet forces you to come out of your shell and try new things. When she spoke sweet nothings in my ear, they were extra spicy. When she popped the bubbly, the cork smoked for a whole new milieu of reasons. And the dinner? Tres magnifique!

I asked her about her impressive cooking – perhaps she’d studied at Le Cordon Bleu – and she replied “Fabulous secrets were revealed to me the day I held a baguette aloft and declared, “By the power of the Eiffel Tower, I AM SCARLET!”

I expected this declaration to be shrouded in peals of lightning and thunder, but I have a flare for the dramatic. Suffice to say, she could cook Julia Child under the table - I devoured her slow cooked lamb and followed it with a glass of the much lauded Chateau Timberlay. The smoky notes, the complex bouquet…and the rest is history.

I like to keep my beauty secrets to myself, but the folks at eye-make-up-tips.com have taken the liberty of breaking down how a mime – such as myself – gets up to face the day.

I'M NOT A STAR. BUT MY CHICKEN BREASTS ARE

SEPTEMBER 20TH, 2008

At least they are in the easy and sophisticated dinner I made tonight. Paillards of chicken with toasted pecans…and creamy polenta…and seared rapini! With a glass of Mommesin Chardonnay this meal gets ten baguettes out of ten!

DINNER AND A MOVIE?

SEPTEMBER 14TH, 2008

If you’re looking to lay low this weekend, befriend English subtitles and check out this list of top French films.

And while you’re watching, why not cross-reference the films with this list of French movie clichés, which strikes a little too close to home for my taste.

MY DATE WITH ANNE, WHO WAS VERY IMPRESSED BY MY RENDITION OF THE EIFFEL TOWER.

SEPTEMBER 10TH, 2008

It’s not often I feel like the chatty one in a conversation, but last night I met the mysterious and elusive Anne. bookkeeper by day, blind dater by night (one date - with me – apparently the first in awhile). The silences were golden - we spoke epic sonnets without saying a word. And I learned so much about her:

  • She likes silent movies
  • She likes cotton candy
  • She likes to medidate
  • She likes French wine
  • She likes shadows

Quiet, confident and reserved - like a Petit Chablis – Anne was a brilliant study in subtlety. Next time I sear a mild whitefish for dinner, I’d be glad to have her join me.

I'M NOT ONLY A CONNOISSEUR OF WINE, BUT ALSO OF LIQUEURS MADE WITH WINE.

JULY 24TH, 2008

Dubonnet Rouge is one of my favourite liqueurs; a wine-based aperitif that’s great over ice. If dinner’s going to be awhile, indulge your guests with a glass alongside this delicious olive walnut spread.

I'M STUCK IN A BOX!!!!!

Cleaning hint: Shower with the water turned off and you won’t get mildew. Am waiting for this concept to catch on outside my circle of mimes.

BON ANNIVERSAIRE MARCEL!

MARCH 22ND, 2008

Today is Marcel Marceau’s birthday. In his honour, a clip of him doing what I do best! (Love him though I do, his taste for interior design is a wee ‘Marie Antoinette’ for me.)
